Scuba Diving off Socorro With Whale Sharks, Mantas and Dolphins

My favorite kind of diving typically involves three things: action, perfect visibility and big fish. After doing a little research, I decided to go to Mexico to dive a small group of islands called the Revillagigedo Archipelago, but more commonly known as Socorro.

Located about 250 miles off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, the Revillagigedos can only be accessed via liveaboard. Each island offers its own set of unique experiences, but the jewel is the legendary dive site Roca Partida.

When we first approached Roca Partida, all I could see was a rock jutting out of the ocean but I had a feeling this was just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. With a quick back roll off the panga, I made my descent down into the blue. It became abundantly clear that this dive site was truly something special.

Within seconds, all three of my favorite diving criteria boxes were checked! The water was so clear it was a little disorienting to look straight down at the light rays bouncing endlessly into the depths. Each dive was a unique action packed adventure! We saw everything you could dream of: dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays. We even encountered a school of silky sharks hunting a bait ball! Socorro is a wild and rugged adventure that showcases nature in its most raw and pure form. It’s the kind of place that reminds you exactly why you fell in love with diving in the first place.
