Video: Great White Breaks Into Cage During Shark Dive

A scuba diver got more than he bargained for during a cage dive off Guadalupe Island. During the dive a great white shark breached the cage, becoming momentarily trapped inside.

In the above video, you can see the close encounter caught on tape by a fellow passenger. While lunging for a chunk of tuna used as bait, the shark manages to break into the cage while thrashing around.

Far from a pre-planned strategy the shark accidentally found itself inside of the shark cage. On the YouTube page, the videographer explains that great white sharks are temporarily blinded when they lunge to bite and that they can’t swim backward.

“So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backward, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage,” he said in the video description.

The churning waters make the action hard to decipher, but the boat crew responds quickly by opening the top of the cage. Within seconds the large shark maneuvers itself back out into the open ocean — though it looks like it may have injured itself during the confusion.

“Is somebody in the cage? Somebody’s in the cage,” you can hear witnesses saying during as the shark disappears and the seas go silent.

After a few tense moments, scuba diver Ming Chan climbs out of the cage completely unharmed — though rather shaken — putting the onlookers' fears to rest.

“It happened so fast. The other divers just kept telling me how lucky I am,” Chan told ABC News today.

This coming face-to-face with Carcharodon carcharias hasn’t shaken either man's love for diving.

“I want to return next year for another great white shark adventure,” the videographer said.
